What is phase change material?
Our phase change material is available by the meter or in the shape of fibers and yarns, which can be knitted or woven. Thus, it can be implemented in your products in whichever way you wish. But what is the purpose of this material?
What is phase change material?
Our phase change material is available by the meter or in the shape of fibers and yarns, which can be knitted or woven. Thus, it can be implemented in your products in whichever way you wish. But what is the purpose of this material?
Generally, you can use phase change materials for thermal management. For example, when the material is used in clothing, it significantly reduces the user's heat peaks and furthermore minimizes sweat formation, thereby notably increasing their comfort. And it works in both ways: If the temperature of the user's body changes, the material prevents them from getting cold. It keeps the temperature stable and the user comfortable. Even with changing temperatures in the environment and other external influences, the material provides a balanced climate without any notable fluctuations.
How our phase change material works
To understand how the material works, one must understand the Outlast® thermo-technology. This technology uses microencapsulated wax, which usually stems from rapeseed oil. Wax liquefies under the influence of heat and solidifies when it gets cold. Thereby, it goes through a phase change either from a solid to a liquid state or the other way around.
In our material, the heat from the user's body melts the wax. Therefore, the thermal energy is used in the phase change. According to a physical law, temperatures can not further increase during this change. And that is why the temperature of the user's body will no longer rise and remain stable instead. A similar thing happens when the body, our former heat source, cools down. Now, the thermal energy is used in the process of making the wax change from a liquid state into a solid state. The user does not get any colder and can further enjoy a stable and comfortable temperature.
Whether as heat storage or heat sink – phase change material (PCM) utilizes the thermal energy coming from the user's body in order to keep them comfortable. No external energy source is needed, and the processes always work without the user having to do anything actively. This technology can, therefore, make many different kinds of products more attractive to potential buyers.
Phase change materials for cooling
Probably, in most cases, the material is used for cooling. Especially in clothing such as footwear or in bedding, it adds extra comfort by keeping the temperature stable and keeping the user from getting too warm. If incorporated in bedding, Outlast® thermo-technology can reduce sweat production by up to 48%, providing a better and more hygienic sleeping experience. Also, in socks, gloves and other clothing pieces, the material can reduce the sweating significantly. Users of products with phase change material benefit from a stable temperature at all times. If you would like to learn more about the cooling effect of the material and how your products and, therefore, your customers can benefit from it as well, please do not hesitate to contact us. We love a challenge and will gladly provide you with further information.
Phase change materials for thermal storage
As already explained, phase change material can also store heat and keep a body from cooling down. This can, for example, be a significant advantage in winter. During the cold season, bedding, clothes and other products with the material will keep the user warm and prevent them from freezing. Sleeping bags with phase change materials will keep every camper comfortable, and blankets with the material will put an end to sleepless nights in the winter due to the low temperatures. There are many more possibilities to benefit from this effect. Feel free to contact us so we can discuss how to include our material in your products and offer your customers additional value.
Taking it one step further: Xelerate & fresh2SKIN
Our phase change materials with the Outlast® thermo-technology can add great value to almost any product – but why stop there? The development team from Outlast continuously develops our existing technologies further in order to offer you and your customers even more advantages. And that is how Xelerate came to life – a further development of the Outlast® thermo-technology.
Xelerate combines this technology with further innovative technology in order to accelerate heat distribution. With this, heat can dissipate much more quickly, making the heat and moisture management even more effective. To achieve this, the natural wax used in the materials is additionally equipped with heat-spreaders. These spreaders do not only react in places where the user's body is in contact with the material but also in the surrounding areas. The active area of heat absorption is, therefore, enlarged, and the material absorbs the thermal energy faster and more effectively. The user benefits from a stable temperature, which adapts extra fast to their needs. Furthermore, sweat production is delayed or even prevented.
But there is more: fresh2SKIN is a technology which is also partly based on the Outlast® thermo-technology and also uses menthol. It is primarily intended for products worn close to the skin, such as socks, underwear and nightwear, and makes the user feel pleasantly cool. Cold receptors in the skin react to the menthol, and the Outlast® thermo-technology provides temperature and moisture management. More comfort and less sweating during hot summer days that is something every customer will appreciate.
Areas of use
Materials with the Outlast® thermo-technology can be used in many different areas and products. Generally, we offer phase change material in textiles by the meter or as yarns and fibers. You can then include it in your products in any way you wish. Of course, we will provide you with all the information you need, and we will happily help you figure out the best way to let your products and customers benefit from the effects of the material.
Phase change material clothing offers your customers something most clothing can not: No matter the external temperature and physical activity, their body will stay at a comfortable temperature. Sweat is reduced, and neither hot flashes nor freezing are something they have to worry about. In all sorts of clothing, phase change materials can be incorporated. Whether shoes, socks, gloves, jackets or other pieces – the comfort added by our material is something every user will surely appreciate.
But also for many other products, phase change materials significantly increase their value for your customers. In bedding, the material provides an improved sleeping experience, and in seating, they keep the user at a comfortable temperature at all times – no excessive sweating or uncomfortable coldness during long car rides. Also, medical products can greatly benefit from this technology. For example, it can be used in seats and cushions for wheelchairs, in support bandages and in medical seats. The possibilities are nearly endless, but no matter what kind of product it is: The phase shift materials will leave your customers feeling just right.
